History of Genesis:
Genesis was established in 1989 by a small group of people inspired by
the Christian faith and its values, who were concerned about the lack
of support for women working in prostitution on the streets of Leeds.
The project started with just one worker, supported by the local
churches, who began by talking to the street working women about their
situation and offering general support with whatever issues arose.
Today,
Genesis has a staff team of seven offering a city-wide service supporting
women involved in prostitution and sexually exploited young people
regardless of their religious, cultural and social background.
As
a respected, well established and growing organisation, our number of
contacts with women and young people has steadily increased and our
services developed to respond to their needs
Our aims are:-
To provide a non-judgemental, accessible service to women that responds to their identified needs.
- To enable women to exit from prostitution by offering long-term support and alternatives to sex work.
To raise awareness of the risk of sexual exploitation to young people through the provision of education and training.
To promote an understanding of the issues for those working in prostitution within the wider community and other professionals.
To ensure a quality service within the local and national framework and
extend the level of service provision through a partnership approach
and the involvement of volunteers.
